.. a walk in downtown

As good as it was once,
Walking the lines and streets so dark,
Smoky as it was, people waiting and talking
With Men staring and women so inviting,

The nights so young, and yes they were,
Too many people talking, yet you can hear,
And paid a dollar, for every glass of beer,
Kept walking until it wasn’t really anywhere,

Sirens, smokers, hookah, walkers, stalkers,
The flashing lights, the troubling dark lanes,
Someone smiling and offering you a drink,
Drunk and broken, breakups and curses,

As you walked past every feeling that night,
Bars, churches, restaurants, vendors, drugs,
Love, passion, loners, liars, thugs and hugs,
It will seem only clear, on one dark night,

And realize that it wasn’t just another night,
It was your life that you were walking past,
An aimless journey isn’t really a waste,
As you walk, where your legs lead you,

You can choose to stop, where you want,
And then walk in, and blow all that you have
In a minute, and sit there with empty pockets,
Five minutes worth of dancing in the dark,

And then there is not one, no one but you,
You walk down the aisle, past the poles,
No one looks at you….
Fresh air again, but again nowhere to go,
Few crumpled dollars in your jeans,
And then you see a distant light

You stop by the one small bar, out there,
That flashes $3 for $4 for shots and beer,
You walk in, and still see those familiar faces,
Smiling, wailing, walking, talking, stalking,

.. you are there, finally for just one more beer.

As good as it was once,
As good as it can get, everything’s different.

….. it just got better ;)
